Your Professional Organizations

Representation

MEA is the ONLY organization that can represent teachers if they are called to Personnel or to meet with their supervisor.  When decisions are being made concerning public education, its teachers, or its students, your association is there representing you

  • at the State Board of Education,

  • at the Memphis Board of Education,

  • in education coalitions,

  • and before legislative committees.

MEA, TEA, and NEA are always in your corner, fighting for the continued advancement of Public School Employees and their concerns.

Lobbying

When you cannot be there in the legislature, your Association will protect your interests.  On every level the Association is recognized as the single most effective voice for public education.

Monitoring

MEA is your best source for accurate and timely updates on new legislation, education policies, and regulations passed by agencies affecting you and your classrooms.  Officers and staff closely monitor meetings and hearings to keep you informed.  The TEA Hotline is available to members 24 hours a day, 1-800-342-8262, or visit the MEA's web site at www.gomea.com or TEA's web site at www.teateachers.org.

Public Relations

The Association keeps the public informed through public service advertising and public relations campaigns.  These activities convey your views and serve to build confidence in public schools.

Scholarships

MEA provides annual scholarships to MEA members' children who are high school graduates and/or children already attending college.  For additional information on MEA scholarships

Liability Insurance

If you are sued by a parent or student, as an MEA member your liability insurance will provide you an attorney and $1 million in coverage for any judgment against you far beyond your membership dues.

Legal Assistance

When questions arise concerning our employment rights or benefits, an MEA UniServ Director is available.  TEA's attorneys are astute in employment-related law and school law...all free to MEA members.

Member Rights

MEA is always working to improve your salary, benefits and working conditions, as well as those things that impact your teaching career.  We provide help when you have a grievance, when you need to write a rebuttal, or when you just have a question.

Professional Development

MEA/TEA/NEA provides special training in all aspects of education and other areas of concern to members.

Publications/Networking

Every Association member will receive national, state and local award-winning publications with the latest information about education developments, grants, and related issues.  Members have a direct contact with colleagues across the state and throughout the nation.

Discounts

Many members consistently save more than their annual membership dues through Association discounts on everything from tire, vacation packages, and homeowner insurance to credit cards and loans.
