There are many reasons to be a member of the MEA/TEA/NEA team.

Member Rights/Legal Assistance
No other teacher organization offers the kind of "on-site" assistance provided by UniServ directors.  These men and women offer the unified services of a strong local/state/national association directly to members where they live and work.  Members also have access to TEA's attorneys who are astute in employment-related law and school law.  All these services are free to MEA members.  For more information call MEA at 901-454-0966.

Professional Development
MEA TEA, and NEA provide special training and workshops in many areas of instruction and other areas of concern to members. Association workshops consistently receive high praise.  In addition, they are free to members!

Publications/Networking
Every Association member will receive national, state, and local award-winning publications with the latest information about education developments, grants, and related issues.  Members have a direct contact with colleagues across the state and throughout the nation.  The TEA website provides members an open gateway to people and resources that help make schools even better, www.teateachers.org

Discounts
Many members consistently save more than their annual membership dues through Association discounts on everything from tires, vacation packages, and homeowners insurance to credit cards and loans.

Representation
MEA is the exclusive representative for certificated personnel and some ESP groups in Memphis City Schools.  MEA is the ONLY organization who can represent you in meetings at the Board of Education.

Lobbying
When you cannot be there in the legislature, your Association will protect your interests.  On every level the Association is recognized as the single most effective voice for public education.

Monitoring
MEA is your best source for accurate and timely updates on new legislation, education policies, and regulations passed by agencies affecting you and your classrooms.  Officers and staff closely monitor meetings and hearings to keep you informed.  The TEA Hotline is available to members 24 hours a day, 1-800-342-8262, or visit the web at www.teateachers.org.

Public Relations
The Association keeps also the public informed through public service advertising and public relations campaigns.  These activities convey your views and serve to build confidence in public schools.

Scholarships
MEA provides annual scholarships to MEA members' children who want to become teachers.  For more information click here Scholarship.

Liability Insurance
If you are sued by a parent or student, as an MEA member your liability insurance will provide you an attorney and $1 million in coverage for any judgment against you far beyond your membership dues.
